Scarista - Scarista picnic Area - Isle of Harris - Western Isles - Outer Hebrides
The Scarista area of The Isle of Harris is a fabulous mix of lovely golden sandy hebridean beaches, coastline, shingle areas with pretty rocks and moorland with the wildflowers beds of machair which flower in the summertime. The Sgarastadh Mhor Picnic area on the west coast of Harris in The Outer Hebrides is perhaps one of the nicest viewpoints to see it all! . You can look across to the panoramic vista of the Harris Hills and Luskentyre opposite and also toward the uninhabited island of Taransay (used in the famous TV series " The Castaways).

Sgrarastadh Mhor Picnic Area
The Picnic Area was built in honour of the original Sgarastadh Mhor Crofters. A long time ago during the Lordship of the Isles 1266 - 1494 and also under the Macleods owners which followed, the west side of Harris would have been quite heavily populated by crofters as this is here the most fertile land "machair" was to be found.

Highland Clearances
Between 1828 and 1853 the Scarista are of Harris fell into the grasp of the "Highland Clearances" where the unfortunate local crofters were cleared off their land and their homes taken to make way for the large sheep farms which the landowners and their factors deemed to be more profitable.

As a result of these "clearances" many of the Scarista crofters fled to other small islands, some even emigrated to Canada and Australia. Even the stones from their blackhouses why resided were taken to build the walls serving to mark the boundaries of the new sheep farms.

The village of Scarista that exists at the present time actually dates back to 1928. When the Great War was over in 1918 the soldiers who returned were promised land and so part of the next small village Borgh Mhor (Borve) and the old village of Sgarasta were divided into 8 crofts which became Sgarasta Mhor with 2 more crofts being added later in 1956.
