Scarista Beach - Isle of Harris - Western Isles - Outer Hebrides
Scarista the lovely golden sandy hebridean beach on the west coast of Harris in The Outer Hebrides looks out towards the uninhabited island of Taransay (used in the famous TV series " The Castaways). The views looking out from Scarista beach are stunning - a pretty sparkling sea, the harris hills, golden sands stretching for three miles. You can approach from the quiet road - and amble through the Scarista moorland - to sandy dunes and see along the way in the summer the beautiful machair carpet of wildflowers.

Scarista Beach
As you cross the sands leading to the Scarista shoreline - there are huge areas of sand that are literally covered in shells. These shells are part of the reason why the "machair" is so pretty on the surrounding moorland in the summer - as they break up and get blown onto the land - adding precious minerals to the earth
During the summer months - these wildflowers form the carpet of flowers called "machair" . Particular areas of the Western Isles - have their own machair made up of all different types of flowers - sometimes some of the species being only specific to that particular region. A carpet of colourful wildflowers specific to the Islands
This beach with its white, golden shimmering sands is just immense - Scarista has to be seen to appreciate its beauty
