Greenfinch - Hebridean Birds - Western Isles Birds - Birdlife and Bird Sightings in the Hebrides
The greenfinch is a rather thickset finch - olive green with prominent yellow wing flashes. These pretty birds are regulars in the western isles. They love sunflower seeds.The birds song is a mix of twittering notes.

These beautiful birds the greenfinches are solitary during the summer months but can form sizeable flocks in winter.
These beautiful birds the greenfinches are solitary during the summer months but can form sizeable flocks in winter.
 
These birds sing from elevated perches or in bat like song flight. They feed on seeds, buds,berries and are often to be seen at bird tables.

These birds breed April to August and have four to six eggs. The incubation period is 13 days - the young fledging at 13-16days. They can have 2 - 3 broods a year. They nest in conifers and bushes.

 

Seen near Stornoway - Western Isles - May 2009 - these birds are really interesting to watch as they hop around on the ground picking up the seed dropped from the bird feeder.
