Buzzards - Hebridean Birds - Western Isles Birds - Birdlife and Bird Sightings in the Hebrides
Buzzards are actually the commonest birds of prey in the UK. Here are just a few photographs of buzzards seen in and around The Isle of Lewis and The Isle of Harris. Should you have any queries or comments in connection with the information I have given in relation to the birds ( all comments or assistance welcome as I am only a novice bird spotter) - please email chris@gcwweb.com

The buzzards prefers the open countryside with small areas of woodland or the edges of more densely wooded areas - but recently they can often being found closer to populated areas, where they can scavenge waste.

All year round the buzzard soars, display and call most in spring. The wingspan varies between 48 inches to 60 inches. Buzzards have a body length of 20 inches. Its plumage is a rich brown, with lighter markings beneath. In flight the wings have a ragged, moth-like appearance as this bird glides to and fro at a tremendous height

Buzzards eat mice and other small rodents, rabbits, young birds and reptiles. & hunt by pouncing from a low hover or a perch and eat rabbits which are plentiful here. Buzzards hunt during the day. They are usually seen on their own, or in pairs. A buzzard spends long periods soaring, holding its straight wings motionless, with the tips of the primary feathers curved upwards and the tail spread out.

Persecution of the Common Buzzard started a long time ago in the UK. Henry VIII made egg stealing illegal, but excluded buzzards. James 1st actually ordered the destruction of buzzards. Buzzards despite this were common in the UK up to the beginning of the 19th century. After that it began to die out - partly through persecution - the population of these birds then began to rise up to the 1950's , when the onset of meximitosis had a detrimental effect - as it killed their main food source "rabbits". The adaptable buzzards then starting eating other foods - such as voles, young birds and reptiles and has now recovered Buzzards are quite a common sight here in The Western Isles.
